Bishwa Prakash Sharma (Nepali: विश्वप्रकाश शर्मा) is a Nepali politician, writer and youth leader, currently serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) from Jhapa District and General Secretary of the Nepali Congress since 2021, alongside Gagan Thapa.[3][4] He represents Jhapa 1 constituency in the House of Representatives.[5]
Early life and education
Sharma was born in Jhapa District, Province No. 1, Nepal.[6] He pursued studies in political science and journalism at Tribhuvan University. His student years were marked by activism in the Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress.[7]
Political career
Student leadership and early activism
Sharma began his political journey through the Nepal Student Union (NSU) and served as NSU president from 2000 to 2002.[8] During his tenure, he emphasized student rights, educational reforms, and the defense of democracy, gaining recognition as a charismatic orator.
Rise within Nepali Congress
He later entered the central working committee of the Nepali Congress and served as the party’s spokesperson, where he earned a reputation as a reform-oriented leader, advocating inclusivity, transparency, and meritocracy.[9]
At the 14th General Convention of the party in December 2021, Sharma was elected as General Secretary, together with Gagan Thapa, marking a generational shift in party leadership.[10][11] Since then, he has prioritized digitalization of party membership, strengthening internal governance, and promoting youth and women’s participation in leadership.[12]
Political role and advocacy
In the 2022 general election, Sharma was elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa-1, securing 39,624 votes and defeating his nearest opponent by a significant margin.[13] [14] As an MP, he has been vocal on governance, social justice, and corruption. In July 2025, he warned that the Nepali Congress could withdraw from the ruling coalition if the government reversed the “cooling-off” provision in the Civil Service Bill.[15] He also criticized the government for rushing the **Land Bill** through Parliament without adequate debate.[16]
Beyond parliamentary politics, Sharma has engaged in symbolic activism. In December 2024, he scaled Lobuche Peak (6,119 m) in the Khumbu region, framing the climb as a platform to highlight issues of corruption, delayed infrastructure, youth unemployment, and climate change.[17] In July 2025, he stressed Nepal’s responsibility to take a leading role in reducing carbon emissions, linking environmental policy to national development.[18]
Sharma has not shied away from controversy. In 2024, he openly challenged Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to investigate alleged policy corruption in the Giri Bandhu land deal, rejecting claims that the Nepali Congress was complicit.[19] In May 2025, from Everest Base Camp, he sent a letter to the Prime Minister urging the government to officially recognize mountaineer Tenzing Norgay as a national hero.[20]
