Location

Beaulieu Park railway station is currently under construction on the Great Eastern Main Line in the East of England. The station will serve the new Beaulieu Park housing development in Boreham, approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) to the north-east of Chelmsford, Essex. It is situated between Chelmsford to the west and Hatfield Peverel to the east.

Originally planned for 2026, the station is due to open in October 2025. This station is the first on the GEML in 100 years.

History

In March 2014, the developer has agreed to fund the railway station and 3,600 new homes north east of Chelmsford.[1] It was originally expected to open in 2019,[2] though due to numerous issues, mainly relating to funding, this date has been pushed back a number of times. In August 2019, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, agreed £218 million from the Housing Infrastructure Fund for the new station and associated road improvements, with the aim of unlocking up to 14,000 new homes.[3] It is the first station on the Great Eastern Main Line in 100 years.[4]

Plans for the new station was approved in June 2022 after Essex County Council agreed on the new design and layout.[5] Construction began in March 2023 and is due to be finished in October 2025 at a cost of £160 million.[6][7] The new station will open to passengers ahead of its original opening date of 2026.[8]

Design

When completed, the station will have three 250 m (820 ft) platforms, capable of receiving 12-carriage trains, while offering 100 mph (160 km/h) track speeds for non-stopping services, lift-based step free access to each platform, an additional footbridge at the end of the platforms, a café unit, parking for 700 cars and 500 bicycles, and a bus interchange. The main station building will have a brick-clad structure, a large National Rail logo hanging from the canopy which is supported by posts, and the name of the station in large metal lettering. The ticket hall inside will be spacious and fit the needs of what will become a busy transport hub. It will be fully equipped, with a retail unit for a potential café, a ticket gate line, and a row of ticket machines.[9][10] The station is located approximately 40 minutes away from London and will welcome over two million passengers annually.[11]

The Beaulieu development will include 14,000 new homes,[9] three schools, a business park, surgery, hotel, and parkland, as well as the station which will also serve the neighbourhoods of Boreham and Springfield to help relieve congestion at Chelmsford's main station.[12]
