King África (born June 7, 1962) is an Argentine dance music project created by DJ Martín Laacré in the early 1990s.

History

Argentine vocalist Martín Laacré founded King África.[1] He made his first appearance in August 1992 on the compilation DJ Dero – Volume 1 with the track "EOE."[2] This was followed by the 1993 single "Póntelo Pónselo."[3] King África's debut album, El Africano, was released the same year and achieved platinum status in both Argentina and Chile.

The second album, Al Palo, was released in 1994. The following year, King África performed at the International Song Festival of Viña del Mar in Chile.[4]

In 1997, Laacré left the project due to what he referred to as artistic and financial disagreements with the other band members.[5] He later returned to the music scene under the name King Africa Music.[6]

The project gained wider recognition for its 2000 remake of the 1993 single "Salta", named after the city, and later retitled "Salta 2000", which featured Mr. Pringles, as well as a cover of "La Bomba", originally recorded by the Bolivian group Azul Azul.
