Amedia AS is a politically independent, foundation-owned Norwegian media company, recognized as the country’s largest newspaper owner since 2023. The group owns more than 100 local, regional, and national media outlets in Norway, and acquired Berlingske Media[1] in Denmark in December 2024. It also holds a stake in the Swedish media company Bonnier News Local .

Amedia was established after A-pressen, originally a company created to support Norwegian labor press, purchased Edda Media in December 2011 and merged the two. The company’s ownership structure changed significantly in February 2016 when Sparebankstiftelsen DNB [2] acquired Amedia from Telenor[3], labor unions[4], and the Fritt Ord Foundation, creating the Amedia Foundation (Amediastiftelsen) as the new, independent owner. The Amedia Foundation now acts as an autonomous media proprietor with no financial ties to Sparebankstiftelsen DNB.

Anders Opdahl is the CEO of Amedia, while André Støylen serves as CEO of the Amedia Foundation and chairs the Amedia board.

History

Throughout its history, Amedia and its predecessors have undergone several ownership transformations. At times, the group has been linked with political organizations and large corporations. The company’s previous ventures have included significant media investments in Russia, but in April 2022, Amedia announced its complete withdrawal from Russia, transferring its printing operations there to Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov and his publication, Novaya Gazeta.

In recent years, Amedia has expanded by acquiring and launching a wide range of local newspapers and digital city newspapers in Norway. As of 2024, the company manages 107 newspaper titles and 20 partner titles, reflecting diverse historical and political traditions. With the acquisition of Berlingske Media in Denmark, Amedia now owns four national titles in that country. In Sweden, Amedia is a co-owner of Bonnier News Local, which operates 65 local newspaper titles.

Digital focus

Amedia is also known for its digital innovation, notably through the +Alt subscription package launched in 2020. In 2022, Amedia and TV2 announced a long-term partnership for sports broadcasting rights, allowing Amedia’s publications to feature Norwegian football, handball, and ice hockey. The company is also the main owner of Moderne Media, a key Norwegian player in podcast production and advertising.

The history of Amedia reflects Norway’s media and political developments over the past century, illustrating a transition from labor movement origins to an independent, non-partisan media group committed to press diversity and digital transformation.
